The Central Government has announced the appointment of Nalin Prabhat, a senior IPS officer from the 1992 Andhra Pradesh cadre, as the Special Director General of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, effective immediately. This decision follows the abrupt curtailment of his tenure as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG), a position he had held since April 19, 2024.
Nalin Prabhat’s new role as Special DG in Jammu and Kashmir comes amidst a backdrop of major administrative changes in the Union Territory. The announcement, made on Independence Day, specifies that Prabhat will serve in this capacity until September 30, 2024. Upon the retirement of the current Director General of Police (DGP) Rashmi Ranjan Swain, an IPS officer from the 1991 AGMUT cadre, Prabhat will assume the role of DGP, Jammu and Kashmir, starting October 1, 2024.
The decision to repatriate and reassign Prabhat from his inter-cadre deputation with Andhra Pradesh to the AGMUT cadre was unexpected. The announcement, made on Wednesday evening, came as a surprise to many within the security establishment. Prabhat, who has had a distinguished career in various capacities, will now focus on the challenging law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Prabhat’s tenure as DGP is set to last until September 2025, providing him a year to steer the police force in one of India’s most sensitive regions. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the central government, reflecting the importance of maintaining stability and security in Jammu and Kashmir.
