The Government of India has appointed Parvathaneni Harish, a seasoned diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) of the 1990 batch, as the next Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York. Harish, currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Germany, will soon take up this critical role, which has been vacant since the retirement of Ruchira Kamboj in June 2024.
This appointment comes at a crucial time, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the ‘UN Summit of the Future’ on September 22-23. Modi is also likely to address an Indian community event in New York during his visit and participate in the UN General Assembly. Speculation is rife that a Quad Summit, involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, may take place on the sidelines of the UN Summit, making Harish’s new role even more significant.
Harish’s extensive experience and diplomatic acumen are expected to strengthen India’s representation at the United Nations during these high-profile events. His immediate focus will be on preparations for the upcoming summits, where India is anticipated to play a pivotal role in discussions on global governance, security, and development.
Harish’s appointment underscores India’s commitment to maintaining a strong and active presence at the UN, particularly at a time when the international community is grappling with complex challenges that require multilateral cooperation and dialogue.
