Coal India’s SECL Ventures into Miyawaki Plantation to Boost Green Cover in Chhattisgarh Coal Belt

In a pioneering move to enhance the ecological balance in the coal belt region of Chhattisgarh, Coal India Ltd‘s subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), is set to undertake Miyawaki method plantation in its operational areas. The initiative will mark the first implementation of the renowned Japanese technique within SECL’s Gevra Area, as the company collaborates with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) on a pilot project estimated at Rs 4 crores.

The Miyawaki method, introduced by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, involves densely planting native trees, shrubs, and groundcover plants within every square meter. The Gevra Area project will span two hectares and include the plantation of 20,000 saplings over a two-year period. The carefully selected species, known for their resilience and minimal maintenance requirements, aim to rapidly create a lush, green canopy, benefitting local communities and wildlife.

The chosen species, including Bargad, Peepal, Aam, Jamun, Karanj, Amla, Ashok, Kaner, Gudhal, Trikoma, Ber, Anjeer, and Nimbu, promise not only to increase the green cover around the Gevra mine but also play a crucial role in dust particle absorption and surface temperature regulation.

SECL, India’s largest coal mine operator, has committed Rs 169 crores over the next four years for extensive plantation initiatives in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. In the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, SECL has added 475 hectares of land under green cover and planted 10.77 lakh saplings, marking the highest achievement among all Coal India subsidiaries.

The company’s dedication to environmental preservation is further emphasized by its recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (MPRVVN). The MoU outlines a five-year plantation plan from 2023-24 to 2027-28, with an additional four-year maintenance commitment for each consecutive year of plantation, totaling an estimated investment of Rs 169 crores.

SECL’s holistic approach, combining coal production with robust environmental conservation efforts, signifies a positive step towards sustainable development in the region and sets an inspiring precedent for the mining industry nationwide.
