Micron’s Semiconductor Unit in Gujarat Gains Momentum with Government Support

In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, Micron’s proposal for a state-of-the-art semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat, received approval from the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in June 2023. With a capital investment of ₹22,516 crore (2.75 billion dollars) and 50% fiscal support, the groundbreaking ceremony was held within a remarkable three months, marking a swift and decisive move towards technological advancement.

Construction of the semiconductor unit is progressing at a brisk pace and is anticipated to be completed within the next 12 months. The facility is set to manufacture memory and storage products, catering to both domestic demand and global exports.

The ambitious project is expected to generate up to 5 thousand direct job opportunities and an additional 15 thousand indirect job opportunities over the next five years. In collaboration with the India Semiconductor Mission, the Government of Gujarat, and Micron, efforts are underway to train approximately 10 thousand engineers, emphasizing the importance of skill development in the semiconductor industry.

The initiative has also spurred discussions with over 30 gasses, chemicals, equipment, substrate manufacturing, and other ancillary industries, showcasing the potential for a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Gujarat.

Today, pivotal agreements were signed among Micron, India Semiconductor Mission, and the Government of Gujarat to ensure timely project milestones and facilitate the disbursement of incentives. Gurusharan Singh, Senior Vice President for Micron, expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support from both the Central and State Governments.

Union Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vishnaw, commended the seamless coordination between the Government of Gujarat, Government of India, and the industry. He pledged full commitment and facilitation for the development of a thriving semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India.

Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, highlighted the project’s rapid pace of development, gaining global attention. The endeavor stands as a testament to India’s commitment to technological innovation and self-reliance in the semiconductor sector, positioning the nation as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape.
