The University Grants Commission(UGC) has instructed all the higher education institutions to award degrees to the students who have completed their degree courses within the stipulated period of 180 days of eligibility. The UGC has taken this decision as it has received many grievances and complaints regarding the delay in awarding degrees to the students enrolled in varied degree courses offered by the universities.

Official notice by the UGC states, “The degree award date/s shall be within 180 days of the date/s by which the students are expected to qualify and become eligible for them.” UGC has updated the regulation on awarding degrees on its official website.
It has been also mentioned in the UGC letter, “Needless to say, receiving a degree in a timely manner after successfully completing a programme is an inalienable right of a student.”
UGC has sent a letter to all vice-chancellors of universities and principals of colleges stating that it will take punitive action against higher education institutions that fail to award degrees in accordance with UGC regulations.
