A ‘Smart City’ efficiently manages its resources and intelligently operates its services. These cities are technologically developed and endeavor to provide a safe, attractive, and lively space for people of all ages. Smart cities are a framework harnessing information and communication technology (ICT) to improve their functions, thus creating a smart and well-connected place to live in. These cities are committed to providing adequate water supply, electricity supply, multifaceted public transport, affordable housing, robust digitalization, and enhanced sanitation and waste management, thus ensuring a quality of life to their residents.
National Smart Cities Mission is an effort to make citizens comfortable and sustainable by offering a well-organized and highly developed infrastructure.
A smart city efficiently manages the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of resources. The key role is to optimize its operations and promote economic growth by using advanced technologies and analyzing specific data. The government authorities initiate the better management of assets and resources in the growing urban environment. ICT is used to develop and promote sustainable development practices and address the rapidly growing urbanization challenges.
The Union Ministry of Urban Development is actively implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. Initially, 100 cities have been included in the National Smart Cities mission that would be redesigned by 2023.
