DST to Launch Call for Pre-Proposals to Establish Thematic Hubs for Quantum Technology Advancements

In a significant stride towards advancing Quantum Technology (QT) in India, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) is set to launch a call for pre-proposals for the establishment of Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs). The announcement will take place on the sidelines of the 9th edition of the India International Science Festival in Faridabad, Haryana, tomorrow.

The pre-proposal initiative invites academic institutions and Research & Development (R&D) Labs to submit innovative proposals in consortia mode, aligning with the objectives of the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The proposed T-Hubs will be dedicated to Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices.

Pre-proposals are expected to showcase the practical applications of quantum technologies. Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser DST and Secretary of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), will elaborate on the highlights of the call, emphasizing the importance of fostering advancements in quantum science.

The decision to invite pre-proposals follows the approval at the first meeting of the Mission Governing Board (MGB) of the National Quantum Mission. The MGB gave a nod to the establishment of four T-Hubs under NQM in consortia format, signaling a strategic move towards harnessing quantum capabilities.

The National Quantum Mission, sanctioned by the Union Cabinet on April 19, 2023, and spearheaded by DST, boasts a substantial outlay of Rs. 6003.65 Crore over eight years. The mission’s overarching goal is to initiate, nurture, and scale up scientific and industrial Research and Development in Quantum Technology. By creating a dynamic and innovative ecosystem, the mission aims to propel Quantum Technology-led economic growth, positioning India as a frontrunner in Quantum Technologies & Applications.

The call for pre-proposals is a pivotal step in realizing the ambitious objectives of the National Quantum Mission, showcasing India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in the development and application of Quantum Technologies.
