CSIR-NIO Launches Certificate Course on Oceanography for Colombo Security Conclave Nations

In a significant leap towards fostering collaboration and enhancing expertise in the realm of Oceanography, the CSIR – National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has initiated a month-long certificate course designed exclusively for member countries of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC). The inaugural session of this pioneering educational initiative unfolded on January 15, 2024.

This educational endeavor stems from the collaborative efforts initiated at the inaugural CSC Oceanographers and Hydrographers conference, held in Goa and Hyderabad in November 2022. Building on the outcomes of the conference, scientists from CSC nations jointly conducted two expeditions in the Indian Ocean Region spanning from June to September 2023. A subsequent joint expedition in the Antarctic, launched in December 2023, is currently in progress.

Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director of CSIR-NIO, highlighted the pivotal role of littoral nations in comprehending the intricacies of the Indian Ocean Region during the inaugural address. The month-long certificate course is under the coordination of Dr. Manguesh Uttam Gauns, Senior Principal Scientist & Head of the Biological Oceanography Division at CSIR-NIO.

Participants in the course will delve into various aspects of Oceanography, with a specific focus on understanding the profound impacts of climate change on the Indian Ocean and global marine ecosystems. The program includes interactive discussions, the exchange of best practices, and hands-on project work to augment practical knowledge.

The course is poised to facilitate a robust exchange of ideas and contribute to the ever-expanding body of knowledge in Oceanography. The engagement aims to bolster the capabilities of participating nations in addressing environmental challenges, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering scientific cooperation.
