Dubai Set to Launch Air Taxi Services Soon

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has inked a transformative agreement with Joby Aviation, marking a significant leap into the future of urban transportation. The contract, announced at the esteemed World Governments Summit in Dubai, grants Joby Aviation exclusive rights to operate air taxis in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for six years, with initial operations targeted as early as 2025.

Joby Aviation, renowned for its development of all-electric aircraft for commercial passenger service, unveiled their cutting-edge air taxi at the event. The aircraft, a marvel of modern engineering, boasts the capacity to carry a pilot and four passengers, soaring through the skies at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour. What might typically be a 45-minute car journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah is now set to be a mere 10-minute flight.

‘This partnership with the government of Dubai is a true honor,’ said Joe Ben Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation. ‘We are committed to demonstrating the immense value of sustainable air travel to the world. Today’s landmark agreement with RTA encompasses all the key ingredients needed to successfully launch an air taxi service – from a definitive path to operations, to well-placed infrastructure supported by dedicated partners, and an aircraft designed for efficient and meaningful journeys.’

Dubai, already a global hub for innovation and forward-thinking initiatives, is poised to solidify its position as a leader in fast, clean, and quiet air travel. The agreement not only facilitates Joby Aviation’s entry into the region but also provides essential financial support and logistical backing from the Dubai government.

Commenting on the milestone, Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors for RTA, emphasized the significance of the air taxi service in Dubai’s transportation landscape. ‘This service is a testament to RTA’s commitment to embracing future technologies. It offers a novel and efficient mobility option for Dubai’s residents and visitors, enabling fast, safe, and convenient travel to key city spots. The air taxi service will enhance seamless multimodal transportation, improving citywide connectivity, and ensuring a smooth travel experience for passengers.’

Joby Aviation’s electric air taxis have already made history, with the first flight in New York City in November 2023 and the US Department of Defence receiving the inaugural electric air taxi delivery in September 2023.
