Elon Musk, who has previously expressed his interest in developing an alternative to the popular ChatGPT AI chatbot, has announced the formation of xAI. This initiative aims to delve into the true nature of the universe.
Led by Musk and composed of executives who have extensive experience in the field of artificial intelligence, including Google's DeepMind, Microsoft Inc., and Tesla Inc., as well as researchers from esteemed academic institutions such as the University of Toronto, xAI has an ambitious mission.
In March, Musk and Jared Birchall, who oversees Musk’s family office, established a business entity called X.AI. This move was documented in a filing with Nevada's Secretary of State. Musk has been notably critical of OpenAI, a leading AI startup and the developer of ChatGPT. Reports also surfaced in April suggesting that Musk engaged in discussions with investors from Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to secure funding for an AI startup. It was revealed that Musk obtained a substantial number of processors from Nvidia Corp. for this new project.
Interestingly, despite his involvement in AI, Musk was one of several researchers and influential figures in the tech industry who urged caution and advocated for a temporary pause in the training of powerful AI models earlier this year.
