India and Mauritius Collaborate on Joint Small Satellite Development

In a significant stride in the realm of space exploration and collaboration, the Union Cabinet of India has granted approval for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC). This MoU outlines the collaborative efforts for the development of a joint small satellite, marking a new chapter in space cooperation between the two nations.

The project is set to involve the expertise of both ISRO and MRIC in the development of the satellite, with a focus on leveraging MRIC’s Ground Station. The collaboration extends to engaging Indian industries in creating specific subsystems for the satellite, providing a significant boost to the domestic space industry.

The joint satellite initiative is expected to garner continuous support from the Mauritius government for ISRO’s ground station, solidifying the foundation for future collaborations. In return, MRIC’s ground station will offer reciprocal support for ISRO’s small satellite missions in the future, reflecting the mutual benefits of this collaboration.

The involvement of Indian industries in subsystem development is anticipated to generate employment opportunities and stimulate growth in the domestic space sector. This strategic partnership aligns with India’s commitment to promoting innovation, technological advancement, and international cooperation in the field of space exploration.

The timeline for the realization of the joint satellite is set at 15 months, with the estimated cost of Rs 20 crore covered by the government of India. The MoU, a testament to the strong bilateral ties between the two nations, was formally signed during the visit of the Minister of State (MEA) to Mauritius on November 1, 2023. This significant event coincided with the ‘Aapravasi Diwas’ celebration, further symbolizing the historical and cultural connections shared between India and Mauritius. The joint satellite initiative stands as a beacon of collaboration, fostering scientific and technological advancements in the field of space exploration.
