In a major push to bridge India’s ancient knowledge systems with modern science, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has announced a call under the Science and Heritage Research Initiative (SHRI) to establish Centres of Excellence (CoE) focused on Traditional Indian Science and Technology.
These Centres will be housed within academic institutions and universities with a proven track record in related fields. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s research ecosystem by encouraging the scientific analysis of traditional knowledge systems using modern tools and techniques, with the potential to generate new, globally relevant insights.
The call invites proposals in the following indicative research areas:
- Astronomy and Mathematics
- Materials and Metallurgy
- Traditional Practices for Preventive Health and Well-Being
- Ancient Building Architecture and Water Management Systems
- Indian Heritage for Digital Space
The DST encourages academicians and scientists from both public and private academic institutions and universities to apply and contribute to preserving and evolving India’s rich scientific heritage.
