President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI), effective May 14, 2025. The announcement was shared by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal via the social media platform X.
‘In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from May 14, 2025,’ the minister posted.
Justice Gavai will succeed incumbent Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who is scheduled to retire on May 13, 2025. His tenure as CJI will be brief, as he is due to retire in November 2025.
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai has had a distinguished judicial career. He was appointed to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, after serving over 15 years in the Bombay High Court. He began as an Additional Judge on November 14, 2003, and was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on November 12, 2005. During his tenure at the Bombay High Court, he presided over benches across Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.
Justice Gavai is the son of the late R.S. Gavai, a former Governor of Bihar and Kerala and a respected social activist.
