Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) and will assume office on November 11, 2024, following the retirement of incumbent CJI Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who will demit office upon reaching the age of 65. The announcement was made by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the appointment was made by the President of India after due consultation with the outgoing Chief Justice.
Justice Khanna, who has been a judge of the Supreme Court since January 18, 2019, will have a six-month tenure as the CJI before retiring on May 13, 2025. He has presided over significant cases, including the one challenging the constitutionality of electoral bonds and the case concerning the repeal of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
His judicial career began with his appointment as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on June 25, 2005, where he was made a permanent judge on February 20, 2006. Currently serving as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, Justice Khanna comes from a family of distinguished legal minds.
