In a significant development aimed at strengthening media oversight and ethical journalism, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla has nominated three Members of Parliament to the Press Council of India (PCI). The nominated MPs include Shri Naresh Ganpat Mhaske, Shri Kali Charan Munda, and Dr. Sambit Patra.
The announcement was made on Tuesday and marks the continuation of the legislative body’s role in upholding press freedom while ensuring accountability in media practices. The nominated members represent diverse regions and political experience, bringing a mix of perspectives to the council, which serves as a watchdog of the press in India.
The Press Council of India is a statutory, quasi-judicial body established to preserve the freedom of the press and improve the standards of newspapers and news agencies in the country. With these new appointments, the Council is poised to address contemporary media challenges more robustly, particularly in the age of digital misinformation and declining journalistic ethics.
