In a decisive move to bolster India’s economic trajectory, NITI Aayog has unveiled a groundbreaking report titled “Designing a Policy for Medium Enterprises”, which presents a focused roadmap to transform medium enterprises into central engines of national growth.
Launched in the capital today by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Shri Suman Bery, and attended by senior members Dr. V.K. Saraswat and Dr. Arvind Virmani, the report casts a spotlight on the often-overlooked segment of medium enterprises within the broader Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem.
Highlighting their significant, yet underutilized potential, the report points out that MSMEs contribute nearly 29% to India’s GDP, account for 40% of exports, and support over 60% of the country’s workforce. Within this sector, medium enterprises are uniquely positioned to scale, innovate, and compete globally—if given the right policy support.
“Medium enterprises can become catalysts for India’s ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047,” said Shri Suman Bery, emphasizing the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
The report addresses structural challenges facing medium enterprises, including limited access to finance, inadequate policy recognition, and a lack of tailored support mechanisms. It calls for targeted policy interventions, inclusive governance, and enhanced coordination between stakeholders to empower these enterprises as frontrunners of innovation, job creation, and international trade.
By positioning medium enterprises as strategic players in India’s pursuit of self-reliance and global competitiveness, the report reinforces their potential to lead India’s transformation into a high-growth, resilient economy.
