The Ministry of Defence has formalized a strategic contract with Mazagon Dockyard Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, on December 20, 2023, marking a significant milestone in maritime capabilities. The contract, valued at Rs 1614.89 Crore, encompasses the procurement of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) destined for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
Of the six NGOPVs to be acquired, four are designated to replace aging Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), while the remaining two will augment the ICG fleet, reinforcing the nation’s maritime security apparatus.
This acquisition underscores the government’s heightened commitment to maritime security and the bolstering of the ICG’s operational capabilities. The NGOPVs, equipped with cutting-edge technology, will play a pivotal role in enhancing surveillance, law enforcement, search and rescue operations, maritime pollution response, and humanitarian assistance efforts by the ICG.

Boasting a length of 115 meters, these indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured OPVs by MDL will feature state-of-the-art capabilities, including Multipurpose Drones, AI functionality, and Wirelessly Controlled Remote Water Rescue Craft Lifebuoys. These enhancements ensure greater flexibility and operational prowess for the ICG in addressing contemporary multidimensional challenges.
The contract stipulates a delivery timeline of 66 months for these multi-role vessels, aligning with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative to fortify the nation’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. The project is poised to stimulate maritime economic activities, foster the growth of ancillary industries, particularly in the MSME sector, and generate employment opportunities. It also reflects a commitment to expertise development within the country.
