National Institute of Siddha Sets Guinness World Record with Mass Varmam Therapy

The National Institute of Siddha (NIS) in Tambaram, Chennai, has set a Guinness World Record by providing Varmam therapy to 567 individuals simultaneously. This historic event highlights the growing recognition of Siddha medicine, a traditional Indian healing system known for its non-invasive, drug-free therapeutic methods.

The event was attended by 567 trained Varmanis (Varmam healers), each administering therapy to one individual, showcasing the widespread therapeutic reach and effectiveness of this ancient practice. Union State Minister of Ayush (Independent Charge) Shri Prataprao Jadhav commended the efforts of NIS in a written message, calling the achievement a testament to the rich legacy of Indian traditional medicine.

Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, congratulated the NIS team and emphasized the significance of the achievement. ‘This event is not just about setting a record but about raising awareness among the younger generation about the science and value behind traditional practices. The Siddha system of medicine is gaining considerable attention globally and within India, and we are committed to sustaining this momentum,’ he said.

Prof. Dr. R. Meenakumari, Director of the National Institute of Siddha, highlighted the unique benefits of Varmam therapy. ‘Siddha Varmam therapy is a non-invasive, cost-effective, and non-pharmacological treatment used for complex neurological, orthopedic, and musculoskeletal diseases, as well as autism spectrum disorder and cerebral palsy in children. This Guinness World Record will bring significant attention to the Siddha system of medicine both in India and around the world,’  she said.

The event is part of NIS’s continued efforts to promote the global acceptance of Siddha medicine and Varmam therapy. Varmam therapy, rooted in the Siddha system, is renowned for its ability to provide rapid relief from musculoskeletal pain, neurological disorders, and trauma-related injuries. It is often misunderstood as a martial art technique but is scientifically grounded and applied as a therapeutic practice in Siddha medicine.

The Guinness World Record marks a pivotal moment for the Siddha healing tradition, aligning with the Ministry of Ayush’s vision to elevate India’s traditional medicine systems on the global stage. As the National Institute of Siddha continues to promote these practices, the record underscores the immense potential of Siddha medicine to address modern health challenges.
