Motorists using expressways across India will experience a toll hike starting Monday, June 3, 2024. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced an average increase of 5 percent in toll charges. The annual revision, originally slated for April 1, was delayed due to the Lok Sabha elections.
A senior NHAI official confirmed on Sunday, ‘The new user fee will come into effect from 3.6.2024.’ This adjustment aligns with the yearly process of updating toll rates in response to changes in the wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation.
India’s national highway network comprises approximately 855 toll plazas. Of these, 675 are public-funded, while 180 are managed by concessionaires, with fees determined by the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
This toll revision affects all motorists using the national highways, with the increased fees aimed at maintaining and developing the extensive road infrastructure. The NHAI oversees this annual toll adjustment to ensure that the toll charges reflect the economic conditions, particularly the inflationary trends measured by the WPI.
Motorists are advised to plan for the increased costs in their travel budgets, effective from Monday, June 3, 2024.
