The government on Tuesday said that the number of undergraduate medical(UG medical )seats has increased by 75 percent and that of post-graduate seats has increased by 93 percent during the same period. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister has said that the Indian students pursuing MMBS abroad and obtaining foreign medical qualifications have to clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination to be registered as a medical practitioner in India.
Effective steps are being taken to increase the number of seats. One of the steps includes a centrally sponsored scheme for setting up new medical institutions by upgrading district/referral hospitals, under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved and 71 have started functioning. It also includes a centrally sponsored scheme for upgrading existing state as well central government medical colleges with an aim to increase MBBS and PG seats.
Total 75 projects have been approved and 55 completed. 22 AIIMS have been approved under the central sector scheme for setting up of new AIIMS.
