Paving the Way for Sustainable Aviation: Indian Airports Set to Achieve Carbon Neutrality

To move towards sustainable aviation, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has taken significant strides to standardize the Carbon Accounting and Reporting framework for Indian airports, with a vision to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with global efforts to combat climate change.

Under the guidance of MoCA, airport operators with scheduled operations have been advised to meticulously map the carbon emissions at their respective airports. Furthermore, a phased approach has been recommended for airports to transition towards carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions. This strategic roadmap aims to create a sustainable aviation ecosystem that balances growth with environmental responsibility.

MoCA has extended its advisory to developers of upcoming Greenfield Airports and respective State Governments, urging them to integrate sustainability measures. This includes a commitment to achieving Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero, with an emphasis on the adoption of green energy practices.

As a testament to these collective efforts, leading airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have not only achieved Level 4+ but have surpassed it, attaining higher Airports International Council (ACI) Accreditation. These airports have successfully become Carbon Neutral, setting a precedent for others to follow.

In a significant stride towards cleaner energy adoption, 66 Indian airports are now operating on 100% Green Energy. This milestone demonstrates the commitment of the aviation sector in India to reduce its carbon footprint and transition to more sustainable practices.

The successful accreditation and the increasing number of airports operating on green energy underscore the aviation industry’s dedication to aligning with global sustainability goals. The MoCA’s proactive measures highlight the government’s commitment to fostering an environmentally conscious aviation sector, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
