The Government of India’s flagship initiative, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, has witnessed an impressive milestone with over 20 lakh farmers successfully completing their e-KYC registrations through the newly launched PM-KISAN mobile app. This innovative app introduces face authentication-based e-KYC, a first-of-its-kind feature in any government benefit scheme.
Launched in February 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme aims to supplement the financial needs of land-holding farmers by providing a direct financial benefit of Rs 6,000 per year in three equal installments. The transparent and farmer-centric digital infrastructure ensures that the financial assistance reaches farmers’ families across the country without intermediaries.
The PM-KISAN mobile app, available for download on Google Playstore, has revolutionized the e-KYC process for farmers, allowing them to complete the authentication process from the comfort of their homes. Unlike traditional methods that require OTPs or fingerprints, the app utilizes face scanning technology, eliminating the need for farmers to visit Common Service Centers (CSC) for biometric-based e-KYC.
One of the distinguishing features of the app is its capacity to empower farmers to assist their neighbors in completing e-KYC registrations. The app allows a single farmer to aid up to 100 others in their community, fostering a spirit of cooperation and community engagement.
The government’s commitment to transparency is further underscored by the robust grievance redressal system in place. Farmers can easily lodge their grievances through the PM-KISAN portal, a 24×7 IVRS facility, or the Public Grievances portal, ensuring effective and timely resolutions.
Moreover, to address technological and language barriers, the Government of India has introduced the Kisan e-Mitra (AI Chatbot), providing digital assistance to farmers in their preferred languages. Initially available in English, Hindi, Odiya, Tamil, and Bangla, the chatbot aims to bridge the communication gap and enhance accessibility for farmers nationwide.
The success of the PM-KISAN mobile app, with its face authentication-based e-KYC feature, reflects a significant step towards leveraging technology for the welfare of farmers. With over 2.80 lakh crores disbursed to more than 11 crore farmers and 20 lakh successful e-KYC registrations, the PM-KISAN scheme continues to make strides in transforming the agricultural landscape of the country.
