PM Modi Inaugurates Atal Setu, India’s Longest Sea Bridge, Enhancing Connectivity and Reducing Travel Time

In a momentous event on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), colloquially known as Atal Setu, marking a historic milestone in India’s infrastructure development. The six-lane bridge, stretching across 21.8 kilometers, was dedicated to the memory of the late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart and former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The construction of Atal Setu, undertaken at a cost of ₹18,000 crore, aims to revolutionize connectivity in the region. The bridge not only links Mumbai to Navi Mumbai but also provides faster access to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport. Additionally, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time to key destinations such as Pune, Goa, and South India.

The foundation stone for the Atal Setu was laid by Prime Minister Modi in December 2016, and its completion is a testament to the government’s commitment to boosting infrastructure and fostering economic growth.

Key Features of Atal Setu:

  • Cost and Dimensions: The bridge, constructed at an expenditure exceeding ₹17,840 crore, spans 21.8 kilometers and comprises six lanes, with approximately 16.5 km over the sea and around 5.5 km on solid ground.
  • Connectivity Boost: One of the significant advantages of this infrastructure project is the enhanced connectivity between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, promoting smoother transportation of goods and facilitating economic activities.
  • Decades-Long Vision: Originally conceptualized six decades ago, the primary objective of Atal Setu was to link Mumbai’s Sewri with Raigad’s Chirle, and its realization stands as a testament to unwavering determination and progress.
  • Travel Time Reduction: With the potential to dramatically reduce travel time, the bridge is anticipated to cut the current two-hour journey from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and South India to a mere 15-20 minutes, making it a game-changer for commuters and businesses alike.

Prime Minister Modi was felicitated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Chief Ministers during the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the collaborative efforts at both the central and state levels. Atal Setu not only stands as a symbol of engineering prowess but also represents a crucial step towards a more connected and economically vibrant future for the region.
