The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it will soon issue new ₹100 and ₹200 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, featuring the signature of Sanjay Malhotra, the current Governor of RBI.
The design of these newly issued banknotes will remain identical to the existing ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. The central bank has confirmed that all previously issued ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes will continue to be legal tender and remain valid for transactions across the country.
The issuance of banknotes bearing the signature of the incumbent Governor is a standard practice followed by the Reserve Bank whenever a new Governor assumes office. Sanjay Malhotra took charge as the Governor of RBI recently, and these new banknotes reflect this transition in leadership.
While there will be no change in design, security features, or overall specifications, the introduction of banknotes with the new signature ensures consistency in the monetary system and banking operations. The RBI has urged the public to remain informed and assured that all older notes in these denominations will continue to hold their value and legitimacy in the economy.
