The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Sanjeev Khirwar (IAS: 1994: AGMUT) as the new Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), marking a significant return for the senior bureaucrat to the administrative landscape of the national capital.
Khirwar takes over from Ashwani Kumar (IAS: 1992: AGMUT), who has been moved to a strategic posting in Jammu & Kashmir.
A 1994-batch IAS officer, Khirwar’s appointment comes after his short tenure in Ladakh, where he was posted following his transfer from Delhi in 2022. His return to the city—formalized in the first week of January 2026—is widely viewed as a strategic decision by the Centre, given his extensive experience and strong understanding of Delhi’s multi-layered governance structure.
Known for his administrative acumen, urban governance expertise, and prior roles in the Delhi government, Khirwar is expected to play a key role in steering MCD’s ongoing reforms, municipal service delivery, and coordination across departments in the capital.
