SKUAST-K to Establish Cutting-edge Centers for Technological Advancements in Agriculture

In a visionary move, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology (SKUAST-K) is set to establish the Centre of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Agriculture (CAIML) to revolutionize agricultural practices. The proposal gained approval during a recent University Council meeting, presided over by LG Manoj Sinha.

The university is also gearing up to launch the Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship (SKIIE) Centre, along with the establishment of the Division of Agro-Meteorology at FOH, Shalimar. These initiatives mark a strategic step towards enhancing SKUAST-K’s infrastructure and adapting to the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The CAIML is envisioned as a hub for cutting-edge research in Agri-4.0 technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, IoT, and automation. SKUAST-K aims to assemble a world-class team of researchers and engineers to spearhead advancements in these fields, fostering the integration of technology into the agricultural sector.

The newly established centers are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of agricultural education and research. Already, the Division of Agricultural Economics and Management at SKUAST-K has initiated management training on the applications of AI & ML.

The CAIML will offer specialized courses and undertake research in areas such as Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Image Processing, Agriculture/Weather data modeling and analysis, data optimization, and Neural Networks. The focus extends to developing intelligent systems and predictive analytics tailored for farming practices.

Notably, SKUAST-K had earlier, in March 2023, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Centre of Development for Advanced Computing (CDAC), Kolkata, to collaborate on research and capacity building in various domains, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, automation, and robotics.

Commending SKUAST-K’s significant contributions to the growth of the Agriculture and Allied sector in Jammu and Kashmir, LG Manoj Sinha highlighted the importance of innovation-led initiatives. The meeting underscored the comprehensive roadmap for SKUAST-K to become a leading institution in agricultural education, innovations, entrepreneurship, leadership, and research.

The Lt Governor emphasized the need to translate research and innovation from the lab to the field, with a focus on increasing farmers’ productivity. Additionally, he instructed the university to conduct short skill training courses for students and initiate a detailed study on yield gaps.

The University Council gave in-principle approval for various agenda points, including the establishment of CAIML, SKIIE Centre, and the Division of Agro-Meteorology, aligning SKUAST-K with national goals and priorities. The SKIIE Centre, in particular, is poised to incubate startups, provide funding, and encourage innovators to compete with Proof of Concept (PoC) initiatives. The Agrometeorology Division will leverage satellite data for weather and soil health monitoring using AI, marking a significant leap in technology-driven agriculture.
