The Governing Council of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC) has appointed Additional Director General (Retd) VD Chafekar, former senior officer of the Indian Coast Guard, as the seventh Executive Director. Chafekar’s term will run from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2028, marking a new chapter in India’s role in advancing regional maritime security.
Chafekar’s appointment underscores India’s unwavering dedication to strengthening regional cooperation and fostering a safer Indo-Pacific. His leadership at ReCAAP ISC is expected to reinforce collaborative efforts to counter maritime threats, including piracy and armed robbery at sea, a top priority for maritime nations across Asia.
Established in 2006, ReCAAP ISC stands as Asia’s first government-to-government framework promoting maritime security cooperation. The organization plays a pivotal role in information sharing, capacity building, and regional coordination to address emerging challenges in maritime safety. India, as a founding contracting party, has actively contributed to ReCAAP ISC’s mission, providing valuable expertise and resources to enhance security in Asian waters.
