In a major step towards democratizing technology and enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in India, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that researchers, academia, startups, and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) will gain access to 18,693 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) under the IndiaAI Mission at competitive prices.
Of these, 15,000 GPUs will be high-end units sourced from leading manufacturers, ensuring best-in-class pricing with discounts of up to 47%. This initiative is set to drive affordability and accessibility for AI developers in the country, fostering indigenous AI model development and innovation.
India’s Own Foundational AI Models in Development
Minister Vaishnaw also revealed that India is on track to develop its own Foundational AI Models within the next few months. These models will be built with a focus on algorithmic efficiency and enhanced quality datasets, catering specifically to Indian linguistic and cultural needs.
The foundational models will emphasize:
- Preservation of India’s cultural identity
- Elimination of biases
- Tailored datasets for Indian users
This move is expected to provide a significant boost to India’s AI ecosystem by ensuring the responsible and inclusive development of AI technologies.
IndiaAI Mission: 18 Projects Selected Under Application Development Initiative
In another key announcement, the Minister confirmed that 18 projects have been selected under the Application Development Initiative as part of the IndiaAI Mission. These projects will primarily focus on AI-driven solutions in three critical sectors:
- Agriculture
- Climate Change
- Learning Disabilities
By addressing these crucial areas, the government aims to leverage AI to drive sustainability, improve educational outcomes, and enhance productivity in the agricultural sector.
AI Safety Institute to Ensure Responsible AI Development
Recognizing the growing concerns around AI-related safety and governance, Minister Vaishnaw also announced the establishment of an AI Safety Institute based on a hub-and-spoke model. This institute will enable researchers, developers, and industry stakeholders to create essential tools, frameworks, and regulatory processes to ensure AI safety and security.
Additionally, under the Indigenous Governance of AI, eight projects have been initiated to strengthen India’s AI regulatory framework, ensuring responsible AI deployment across industries.
