Google Announces Digitisation Fund for India, $10 Billion to be Invested

During a recent meeting, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the company will be investing $10 billion in India’s digitisation fund. This investment will recognize India’s leadership in fintech and support small and large businesses in India, the US, and other countries around the world.

During the meeting, Pichai also announced the opening of Google’s global fintech operation center in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) in Gandhinagar.

‘It was an honour to meet Prime Minister Modi during the historic visit to the US. We shared with the Prime Minister that Google is investing $10 billion in India’s digitisation fund,’ Pichai said.

Further adding he said, ‘We are announcing the opening of our global fintech operation center in GIFT City, Gujarat. PM’s vision for Digital India was way ahead of his time I now see it as a blueprint that other countries are looking to do.’

A Google spokesperson said that the opening of the fintech center in GIFT City, Gujarat, will recognize India’s leadership in fintech and support businesses in India, the US, and other countries.

Google has been operating in India since 2004, with offices in five key cities across the country. In 2020, Google announced the Google for India Digitization fund, committing to invest $10 billion in four areas: affordable access and information for every Indian in their own language, building new services relevant to India’s unique needs, empowering businesses as they embark on digital transformation, and leveraging technology and artificial intelligence for social good.

Google has also partnered with Indian institutions to support India’s digital transformation journey.

The Google AI Research Center in Bengaluru is utilizing AI to advance India’s digital transformation efforts by developing models that can support more than 100 Indian languages. Additionally, the center is collaborating with the Indian Institute of Science to promote the open sourcing of speech data through India’s Bhashini project.

Google AI Research Center has also partnered with IIT Madras to create a multidisciplinary Center for Responsible AI.

Google Cloud is focused on providing innovative cloud technologies to support businesses and governments in running their operations on the cloud. Google Cloud has been an important part of India’s digital transformation journey, and many of India’s biggest enterprises and unicorns, including Jio, Adani, Mahindra Group, Sharechat, HDFC Bank, Glance Roposo, and hundreds of others are currently benefiting from Google Cloud and AI offerings. To meet the growing demand for its services, Google Cloud now has two cloud regions in Delhi NCR and Mumbai.
