New Delhi: The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), the first-ever medical college in Nagaland, was inaugurated in. Kohima, Nagaland. Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, presided over the ceremony, which was attended by Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of Nagaland; T R Zeliang, the Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland; and P Paiwang Konyak, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized that NIMSR is not simply a medical college, but also an esteemed research institute. It aims to not only provide quality medical education but also tackle the healthcare challenges faced by the Naga community.
The students and other stakeholders were encouraged by the Union Health Minister to broaden their research horizons beyond national borders. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities abroad as well. Additionally, he shared that the Union Government has introduced foreign language courses in several medical education institutes to assist students in gaining an advantage in international job placements.
Dr Mandaviya said, ‘Strengthening the medical, nursing and pharmacy education in the country is an endeavour of the Union Govt for the holistic development and expansion of the country’s health sector. The aim is to ensure that each citizen of India is able to get access to affordable and accessible healthcare across the country.’
He also highlighted the expansion of Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country to improve access to quality and affordable medicines for all.
Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio stated, ‘Today is a historic day for the people of Nagaland as we inaugurated the first medical college in the state.’
Highlighting that it was a long cherished dream of the people of Nagaland to have a medical college in their state, he thanked the Union Govt for steadfastly taking up the project. He also said that NIMSR would help the state in strengthening its secondary and tertiary healthcare and he further hoped that it would become a centre of excellence in the coming days.
During the launch, P Paiwang Konyak, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland, said, ‘The inauguration of NIMSR is an auspicious occasion for the state of Nagaland and thanked the Union Govt for the importance given to strengthening medical education and health infrastructure in the state. He also thanked the World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and other partners and agencies who were involved with the NIMSR Kohima project.’
The inauguration of NIMSR Kohima plays a vital role in the Government’s proactive measures to enhance the standard of medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Nagaland and the entire Northeast region.

NIMSR Kohima is affiliated to Nagaland University. It received the Letter of Permission for admission of 100 MBBS seats from academic year 2023-2024 from the National Medical Commission (NMC), in April 2023 paving way to start the first Medical College in the state after 60 years of statehood, realizing the long-cherished dream of the people of Nagaland.
85 MBBS students from state of Nagaland and 6 students from all India seats got admitted in NIMSR and have joined MBBS classes after induction program on 1.9.2023.
