In a recent interview with ilouge Media, Sanjeev Banzal, Director General of Education and Research Network India (ERNET India), shed light on the transformative impact of government-developed platforms in India. Mr. Banzal highlighted the significant role these platforms play in facilitating seamless interactions between the government and private entities, ushering in a new era of efficiency and collaboration.
India has witnessed the successful deployment of various platforms, such as Aadhaar, UPI, GeM, and the upcoming Disha platform and ONDC. These platforms, once provided by the government and interconnected through APIs with diverse agencies, both public and private, have paved the way for a multitude of applications. Mr. Banzal emphasized that this interconnectedness eliminates the need for redundant efforts in platform development, offering a streamlined approach to service delivery.
Using the example of UPI, he highlighted that over 40% of the world’s financial transactions now take place on this platform. This success story illustrates the tangible benefits that can be realized through the strategic implementation of government platforms.
He also explained the inherent advantages of a connected platform ecosystem. By bringing together government and private agencies through APIs, these platforms create synergies that lead to improved efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in service delivery.
Another notable platform he mentioned was the CoWIN app, a critical tool in the country’s vaccination drive. Further, he elaborated on how the app has played a pivotal role in managing and tracking the vaccination process, maintaining a comprehensive database of those vaccinated and those yet to receive the vaccine. The interconnected nature of platforms like CoWIN has proven instrumental in enhancing the delivery of public services, particularly in crucial areas such as healthcare.
However, he underscored the paramount importance of data security in the realm of digital transformation. Banzal emphasized that alongside connectivity and affordable devices, cybersecurity stands as a crucial pillar, without which all efforts would be rendered futile. He stressed the necessity for integrating cybersecurity measures into the very fabric of system development and design, highlighting ongoing efforts in India to bolster cybersecurity initiatives.
While acknowledging the strides made by the educated population, he highlighted the imperative of addressing the digital divide, particularly among those less educated. He underscored the pivotal role of digital literacy and the adaptability of technology in overcoming this challenge. At ERNET India, he explained, efforts are dedicated to providing digital infrastructure to schools, coupled with comprehensive training programs spanning three months for teachers and students. The focus is on instilling a change in mindset, removing any apprehensions associated with technology, akin to the successful adoption of UPI. His insights underscore the importance of holistic approaches in fostering widespread technology adoption, ensuring a smooth transition and creating a sense of trust and security among users.
As the government continues to innovate and expand its platform offerings, the vision is clear: to create an interconnected landscape that maximizes the benefits of technological advancements for the greater good. The interview with Mr. Sanjeev Banzal serves as a testament to the pivotal role played by these platforms in reshaping the service delivery landscape in India.
