In a recent meeting on Monday, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, and Minister of State for PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, welcomed a delegation led by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil Councillor, Stanzin Lakpa. The delegation expressed heartfelt gratitude to Government for the accelerated development of Ladakh since it attained Union Territory status in October 2019.
Highlighting the remarkable strides made under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Dr Jitendra Singh emphasized the Central Government’s unwavering commitment to the development and welfare of Ladakh’s local population, including Buddhists and tribals. He credited PM Modi for prioritizing Ladakh, unlike previous administrations, leading to transformative initiatives and progress.
Among the notable achievements, Ladakh has witnessed the establishment of a University, Hotel Management Institute, and professional Colleges, all for the first time. Centre’s commitment to Ladakh’s environmental sustainability was underscored by Dr Jitendra Singh, who detailed the action plan for a “Carbon Neutral” Ladakh. A significant Rs. 50 crore Special Development Package has been allocated to fund various projects in the region, marking a new era of central government support.
The announcement of South East Asia’s first Night Sky Sanctuary at Hanle village in Eastern Ladakh drew attention, with Dr Jitendra Singh highlighting its potential to boost Astro-tourism. The sanctuary, part of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, is set to house some of the world’s highest-located optical, infra-red, and gamma-ray telescopes.
In a move promoting local produce, Dr Jitendra Singh disclosed that the CSIR in the Union Ministry of Science & Technology is endorsing “Leh Berry” – an exclusive food product from the cold desert. Additionally, the Department of Atomic Energy will establish facilities for Gamma Irradiation Technology in Ladakh, enhancing the preservation and shelf-life of fruits and vegetables.
The Minister concluded on a positive note, acknowledging Ladakh’s growing international presence, as Apricots from the region are now being exported to Dubai and other overseas destinations. The developments signify a comprehensive approach towards Ladakh’s progress and sustainability, reflecting the commitment of the government.
