In a ceremonial change of command, Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty assumed the prestigious position of Commandant at the Indian Naval Academy. With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, Vice Admiral McCarty brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1989, Vice Admiral McCarty’s journey has been marked by a commitment to excellence and a specialization in ‘Gunnery and Missiles.’ His early career included serving as part of the commissioning crew of INS Delhi, where he played a pivotal role in the operational readiness of the frontline Guided Missile Destroyer.
Throughout his career, Vice Admiral McCarty commanded various vessels, showcasing his leadership skills and strategic acumen. Notable commands include the Anti-Submarine Patrol Vessel INS Ajay, Guided Missile Corvette INS Khanjar, and Guided Missile Frigate INS Shivalik. His experience extends to executive roles on Seaward Defence Patrol Vessels, Guided Missile Vessels, and Landing Platform Dock INS Jalashwa.
In addition to his sea command, Vice Admiral McCarty has held key staff assignments, including Training Commander at the Naval Academy and Command Plans Officer at the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. His international exposure includes serving as Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Sri Lanka and as India’s Defence Adviser to the Republic of Singapore with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of the Philippines.
Notably, Vice Admiral McCarty served as Commodore (Naval Plans) from 2018 to 2020, contributing significantly to the formulation of the Indian Navy’s Perspective, Financial, and Acquisition Plans. Following his elevation to the Flag Rank on February 10, 2020, he assumed the role of Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Staff Requirements) at the Naval Headquarters, where he played a pivotal role in capability development and shaping the combat policy of the Indian Navy.
Before taking charge as the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, Vice Admiral McCarty served as the Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet from November 15, 2022, to November 9, 2023.
