CBSE Extends Special Facilities for Students with Type-1 Diabetes in Board Exams

In a move towards inclusivity and support for students with medical conditions, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced special provisions for candidates suffering from Type-1 diabetes in the upcoming class 10 and 12 board exams for the year 2024.

Recognizing the challenges faced by students managing Type-1 diabetes during exam times, CBSE has introduced a range of facilities aimed at addressing their medical needs effectively. A recent circular issued by the board outlines these measures and provides standard operating procedures (SOPs) for students to avail themselves of these facilities seamlessly.

Under the new guidelines, students with Type-1 diabetes will be permitted to carry essential items during the exams, provided they are stored in a transparent pouch. These items include sugar tablets, chocolates, fruits such as banana, apple, and orange, snack items like sandwiches and high-protein diets, prescribed medications, a clear water bottle (500 ml), glucometer with glucose testing strips, and devices like Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) machine, Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) machine, and/or insulin pumps.

To ensure smooth implementation of these provisions, CBSE has outlined specific SOPs for students and schools. Key guidelines include indicating Type-1 diabetes status during registration, uploading necessary medical documents on the portal, adhering to specified application schedules, and informing exam centers about required items in advance.

Students are required to arrive at the exam center by 9:45 am, at least 45 minutes before the exam commences. All requests and applications must be routed through the respective schools, and direct requests to CBSE will not be entertained, mentioned the release.

Furthermore, to maintain integrity and security during exams, all permitted items, except for body-attached equipment, will be stored with the assistant superintendent (invigilator) in a transparent box/pouch and made accessible to students as needed.
