To promote the representation and empowerment of Indian women and girls in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM), the ‘Science for Women-A Technology & Innovation (SWATI)’ Portal was officially inaugurated by Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.
The launch, held at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, marks a significant milestone in efforts to bridge the gender gap in STEMM fields. Prof. Sood emphasized that the SWATI Portal’s database will play a crucial role in shaping policies to address gender disparities in these sectors.
Developed, hosted, and maintained by the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), under the leadership of Dr. Subhra Chakraborty, Director of NIPGR, the SWATI Portal is hailed as the first-of-its-kind in India. Dr. Chakraborty highlighted its interactive nature, making it a dynamic platform for showcasing the achievements and contributions of women in STEMM.
Notably, the portal aims to include data from all women scientists across various career stages and subjects, both in academia and industry. It seeks to facilitate long-term research on issues of equality, diversity, and inclusivity in India, providing a comprehensive database for policymakers, researchers, and the public.
The SWATI Portal encompasses various sections, including profiles of award recipients, faculty members, research fellows, students, entrepreneurs, and professionals in alternate careers. With over 3000 ‘WiS Data Cards’ already incorporated, the portal is poised to become a central hub for information and networking in the STEMM community.
Moving forward, the SWATI Portal promises to serve as a catalyst for fostering inclusivity, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among women in STEMM fields. By providing a platform for visibility and recognition, it aims to inspire the next generation of female scientists and entrepreneurs, contributing to the advancement of science and innovation in India and beyond.
