According to recently issued directive, Senior IRS officer Sanjay Kumar (1988 batch) has been appointed as a Member (Audit and Judicial) of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He will contribute to the management and oversight of various tax-related matters. His duties will also include collection of personal income tax and corporate tax.
The CBDT, which oversees the formulation and regulation of policies within the Income Tax Department, operates with a structure comprising six members, led by a chairperson. Each member enjoys the rank and pay equivalent to that of a special secretary.
The CBDT is a part of Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance. CBDT provides essential inputs for policy and planning of direct taxes in India, at the same time it is also responsible for administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department. The Central Board of Direct Taxes is a statutory authority functioning under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963.
