Mumbai Surpasses Beijing, Crowned Asia’s New Billionaire Capital

In the latest release of the Hurun Global Rich List for 2024, Indian business magnates Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani have captured attention with their remarkable wealth gains.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, retains his position as Asia’s richest person, boasting a net worth of USD 115 billion at 66 years old. Despite a 40% increase in wealth, Ambani slipped to the 10th spot globally, showcasing the fierce competition among the world’s wealthiest.

Meanwhile, Gautam Adani, founder of the Adani Group, experienced an astounding surge in wealth, amounting to USD 33 billion. At 61 years old, Adani now stands at the 15th position globally with a net worth of USD 86 billion. This surge in wealth is attributed to a rally in his companies’ shares following a significant Supreme Court verdict related to issues raised in the Hindenburg report.

The Hurun Global Rich List 2024 also reveals a robust growth in billionaire numbers worldwide, with 167 new billionaires added, bringing the global tally to 3,279 individuals. Notably, over half of this new wealth generated is attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

In terms of country standings, the United States continues to lead with 800 billionaires, adding 109 new ones. China, despite a decline of 155 billionaires, still holds the top spot globally with 814 billionaires.

Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla, has reclaimed his title as the world’s richest person for the third time in four years, boasting a staggering net worth of USD 231 billion. This rise is primarily driven by a surge in Tesla shares. Jeff Bezos of Amazon has risen two places to second place, amassing a 57% increase in wealth to reach USD 185 billion. Bernard Arnault, last year’s number one, has slipped to third place with a wealth decrease to USD 175 billion.

India has seen a significant rise in its billionaire population, ranking third globally with 271 billionaires, marking an addition of 84 individuals, the second-highest rise after the United States. Mumbai has surpassed Beijing to become Asia’s billionaire capital for the first time, securing its place in the world’s top three cities for billionaires.

The Hurun Global Rich List 2024 highlights the dynamic nature of wealth accumulation on a global scale, with Indian tycoons making notable strides in the ever-competitive landscape of billionaire rankings.
