Adani Group has announced its plans to construct the world’s largest hybrid power park in the Khavda desert of Gujarat’s Kutch district. This project is part of the company’s commitment to achieve a renewable energy capacity of 45 GW by 2030. With a capacity to generate 20 GW of green energy, the park will be built in the middle of the desert, covering an expansive area of 72,000 acres. Adani Group chairman, Gautam Adani, expressed his excitement about this highly complex and ambitious undertaking during the Adani Enterprises annual general meeting.
The execution of this project will be spearheaded by Adani Green Energy (AGEL), the renewable energy arm of the group. While further details were not disclosed, it is evident that Adani Group is determined to play a critical role in India’s journey towards achieving net-zero emissions. AGEL has already commissioned the world’s largest hybrid solar-wind project, consisting of 2.14 GW, in Rajasthan. This, combined with the group’s operational renewable energy portfolio of over 8 GW, reinforces Adani Group’s position as the largest renewable energy producer in the country.
Adani Group’s chairman reiterated their unwavering focus on producing green electricity at the lowest possible cost and at scale. Their success in incubating new businesses, which accounted for about 50% of Ebitda in FY23, showcases their entrepreneurial capabilities. Adani Enterprises is progressing as scheduled with two key projects—the Navi Mumbai Airport and a copper smelter complex. The latter, operated by Kutch Copper, will be an integrated facility with an annual production capacity of 0.5 MTPA. Additionally, Adani Group has plans to explore the production of copper, gold, and silver.
Furthermore, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) is on track to commission India’s largest transshipment hub in Vizhinjam, Kerala, within the next 12-24 months. With an estimated cost of Rs 7,700 crore, this deepwater multipurpose seaport aims to boost maritime trade and connectivity. APSEZ also has intentions to commission a port in Colombo. The Navi Mumbai Airport is preparing for operational readiness and airport transition by December 2024, as stated by Gautam Adani. NDTV, which was acquired by the group in August last year, is expanding its global programming and coverage.
In the technology sector, Adani Group’s data center joint venture, JV AdaniConneX, is progressing towards setting up a capacity of 350 MW in the short term and 1 GW in the medium term. This bold initiative represents the largest order book in India’s data center market. As part of its vision to become the world’s largest port operator, APSEZ aims to boost cargo volumes at its ports to 1 billion tonnes per year by 2030. The company plans to collaborate closely with state governments to develop the industrial hinterland surrounding its ports. Additionally, APSEZ CEO Karan Adani stated that the company intends to gradually expand its port interests beyond India.
