The Chhattisgarh government has appointed 1992-batch IPS officer Arun Dev Gautam as the new Director General of Police (DGP), following the retirement of Ashok Juneja. His appointment was endorsed by the UPSC from a panel of shortlisted candidates.
A native of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Gautam began his policing career in the Madhya Pradesh cadre before opting for Chhattisgarh post its formation in 2000. With extensive experience in conflict-prone regions, he has served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in six key districts, including Korba, Rajnandgaon, and Bastar.
Gautam is recognized for his strategic approach in handling security challenges. Notably, he played a pivotal role in restoring order in Rajnandgaon following a 2009 Naxal ambush that claimed the lives of 29 police personnel, including the district SP. Additionally, his leadership during the 2013 Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, held months after the Jhiram Valley massacre, contributed to increased voter turnout and ensured peaceful polling.
His distinguished service has earned him several accolades, including the United Nations Medal for his tenure in Kosovo (2002), the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2010), and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2018). With a background in international law and political science, his academic credentials further enhance his capability to manage security challenges.
As the newly appointed DGP, Gautam faces the formidable task of addressing Maoist insurgency in regions like Bastar and Sukma. Additionally, he will oversee crucial departments, including home security, prisons, transport, civil defense, and fire services.
Colleagues describe him as a hands-on leader, known for revitalizing challenging assignments. His prior roles as IG of Bastar Range and Bilaspur, along with his leadership in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), training, and railway security, reflect his versatility and readiness for the role.
