Education, being under the concurrent list, witnesses a collaborative effort from both Central and State Governments to ensure the delivery of quality higher education across the nation. The landscape of higher education in India is marked by the presence of prominent institutions, and the Ministry of Education oversees 47 Central Universities, 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 21 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), 7 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and numerous other Higher Education Institutions.
These institutions collectively cater to the educational aspirations of diverse sections of the country, including the tribal population. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, the Central and State Governments have undertaken various initiatives to encourage access to higher education for tribal students.
To facilitate this, the Government has implemented numerous scholarships and fellowship programs aimed at providing financial assistance to tribal students pursuing higher education. These initiatives seek to bridge gaps, ensuring that no deserving student is deprived of educational opportunities due to financial constraints.
In addition to financial support, the Government is committed to providing reservations in admissions for Scheduled Tribe students in all Central Educational Institutions. This aligns with the extant Reservation Policy of the Government of India, aiming to create a level playing field and promote equitable representation in higher education.
As a cornerstone of this commitment, two Central Tribal Universities, namely the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Amarkantak and the Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh in Vizianagram, have been established. These universities serve as beacons of higher education and research, primarily dedicated to the tribal population of the country. Through cutting-edge research facilities and comprehensive academic programs, these institutions play a pivotal role in nurturing the intellectual capital of the tribal communities.
The holistic approach towards tribal education underscores the importance of not only providing access to higher education but also fostering an environment conducive to growth and development. It is a testament to the government’s dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape for all sections of society.
