In a momentous development towards bolstering indigenous capabilities and achieving self-reliance in ammunition manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence has inked a groundbreaking contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Pune, for the procurement of Electronic Fuzes for the Indian Army. The 10-year contract, valued at Rs 5,336.25 crore, stands as a testament to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, aligning with the government’s commitment to enhancing indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
The contract, falling under the ‘Manufacture of Ammunition for Indian Army by Indian Industry’ initiative, is a strategic move to meet the long-term ammunition requirements of the Indian Army. The primary objectives include building ammunition stocks to reduce dependence on imports, achieving self-sufficiency in ammunition manufacturing, acquiring critical technologies, and securing stocks against potential disruptions in the supply chain.

Electronic Fuzes, a critical component of medium to heavy calibre Artillery guns, play a pivotal role in providing sustained artillery firepower for military operations. These fuzes will be employed in artillery guns capable of engaging in lethal operations across diverse terrains, including high-altitude areas along the Northern Borders.
Under the terms of the contract, BEL will manufacture Electronic Fuzes at its Pune facility and the upcoming Nagpur Plant. This strategic partnership is expected to generate employment opportunities, contributing to one and a half lakh man-days and promoting the active involvement of Indian industries, including MSMEs, in ammunition manufacturing. The collaboration aims to broaden the ammunition manufacturing ecosystem in the country, fostering innovation, skill development, and economic growth.
This contract signifies a significant stride towards achieving self-sufficiency in defence production, reducing import dependence, and reinforcing the nation’s capabilities in critical defence technologies. The Ministry of Defence remains committed to promoting indigenous manufacturing, fostering innovation, and securing the nation’s defence preparedness.
