The Central Government on Saturday announced the appointment of Dr. T.V. Somanathan as the Cabinet Secretary-Designate. Currently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Expenditure in the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Somanathan has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Cabinet Secretariat, marking the commencement of his transition to the nation’s top bureaucratic position.
Dr. Somanathan, a distinguished officer of the 1987 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the Tamil Nadu cadre, will succeed the incumbent Cabinet Secretary, Rajiv Gauba (IAS: 1982: JH), who has held the position since 2019. The transition is scheduled to take effect from August 30, 2024, making Dr. Somanathan the 33rd Cabinet Secretary of India.
Rajiv Gauba’s tenure as Cabinet Secretary has been marked by significant contributions to governance, and his successor, Dr. Somanathan, is anticipated to carry forward the mantle with the same level of dedication and excellence.
