In a significant move aimed at supporting students and enhancing the state’s educational framework, Meghalaya’s Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, announced that the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will conduct two Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations annually from 2025. The decision, approved by the state cabinet, was made public on Saturday.
The first SSLC examination will take place in February or early March, while the second will be scheduled in May. The latter exam will specifically cater to students who did not pass the initial attempt, allowing them to retake failed subjects without a lengthy delay. This initiative is aligned with the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and aims to minimize the academic disruption for students.
‘This decision is designed to provide a second chance to students who fail in one or more subjects, reducing the time lost between attempts and offering them a better opportunity to succeed,’ Sangma stated.
In addition to this, the state cabinet has approved a shift in examination requirements beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year. The “best of five” optional paper system will be discontinued, meaning students will need to pass all six subjects in the board examination.
The cabinet also sanctioned several other important measures, including the Service Rules for the Meghalaya Public School Service, the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules, 2024, and the Farmers Empowerment Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024. These decisions are expected to streamline various administrative processes and further empower local stakeholders in the education and agricultural sectors.
This series of reforms underscores Meghalaya’s commitment to advancing educational standards and providing students with enhanced opportunities for academic success.
