European Union-India to Promote Start-up Collaboration on Recycling of E-Vehicles Batteries

The European Union (EU) and India have embarked on a pioneering venture aimed at fostering collaboration between startups in the realm of Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles (EVs). Today, they announced the launch of an Expression of Interest (EoI) for startups in this sector, marking a significant step towards enhancing cooperation in clean and green technologies.

This initiative, facilitated under the India-EU Trade & Technology Council (TTC) established on April 25, 2022, seeks to propel the circularity of rare materials and pave the way towards carbon neutrality in both India and the EU. By bringing together the innovative prowess of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups, the matchmaking event aims to accelerate advancements in sustainable practices within the EV industry.

The EoI for the Matchmaking Event launched today, provides a platform for Indian and EU startups/SMEs in the field of EV Battery Recycling Technologies to pitch their innovative solutions and engage with Indian/European venture capitalists and solution adopters. A total of twelve innovators, six from each region, will be selected to participate in the Matchmaking Event scheduled for June 2024. Following pitching presentations, six finalists (three from the EU and three from India) will be granted the opportunity to visit each other’s respective regions.

Emphasizing the significance of this collaboration, Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, stated, “Our objective is to harmonize efforts with EU innovators to jointly develop battery recycling solutions that drive industry expansion. We are dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment where sustainability and innovation form the cornerstone of a flourishing circular economy.”

Marc Lemaître, Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential of the matchmaking event to unlock innovative possibilities for a green and circular economy. “The match-making event is a step-ahead to unlock innovative possibilities leading to a green and circular economy. We encourage innovators from the EU to seize this opportunity and explore potential collaborations with their Indian counterparts,” said Lemaître.

This initiative serves as a testament to the commitment of both the EU and India towards promoting sustainability, innovation, and stronger economic ties. It offers a strategic platform for startups/SMEs to not only showcase their expertise but also to forge vital partnerships that drive the evolution of advanced battery recycling techniques focused on waste minimization and resource sustainability.

Interested startups and SMEs from India and the EU are invited to submit their Expressions of Interest (EoI) by 30th April, 2024, to participate in this groundbreaking initiative.
