Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Dr. C Rangarajan emphasized the critical role of combining domain knowledge with data-driven analytical skills in Development Studies, at the inaugural launch of a PhD programme for working professionals in Development Studies and Public Policy. The event, held at the School of Social Sciences, ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education Campus, drew attention to the unique and challenging structure of the programme designed for scholars.
In his keynote address as chief guest, Dr. Rangarajan highlighted the rapid expansion of knowledge in Development Studies and Public Policy, underscoring the need for scholars to adopt a multidisciplinary approach. ‘Development Studies connects deeply with Economics, Political Science, and Statistics,’ he said, elaborating that while Economics informs principles, Political Science sheds light on the distribution of economic benefits within society.
He further underscored the importance of integrating Statistics into these fields, emphasizing its role in evidence-based policymaking. Stressing the close relationship between Development Studies and Public Policy, Dr. Rangarajan used examples from the education sector to illustrate how qualitative outcomes shape public policy decisions.
Addressing the scholars, he urged them to extend their learning beyond classroom teachings, advocating for a broader exploration of concepts and practical applications in the programme.
Dr. Rangarajan also reflected on his association with the late Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, praising his vision and courage in blending academic proficiency with public policy practice. ‘Dr. Singh exemplified how robust academic foundations can lead to impactful public policy decisions,’ he said.
The newly launched PhD programme is aimed at equipping working professionals with advanced knowledge and analytical skills in Development Studies and Public Policy. Its rigorous structure promises to challenge scholars while preparing them to tackle pressing societal and economic challenges.
