GAIL, India’s leading gas supplier, has unveiled plans for a monumental 1500 KTA ethane cracker project in Ashta, Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh. The ambitious venture, with a projected investment of Rs 60,000 crore, aims to produce various ethylene derivatives, significantly boosting the region’s industrial landscape.
In a recent exchange filing, GAIL confirmed that it has approached the Madhya Pradesh government, seeking essential enablers for the project’s successful implementation. The Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation Limited (MPIDC) has committed to providing approximately 800 hectares of land for the project, with state authorities already initiating the necessary procedures.
‘This project, with an estimated investment of Rs 60,000 crore, will be the largest ethane cracker project in India,’ stated a representative from the Chief Minister’s Office of Madhya Pradesh. The greenfield petrochemical complex will manufacture key products such as LLDPE, HDPE, MEG, and propylene. The construction phase is expected to generate employment for around 15,000 people, while the operational phase will provide jobs for approximately 5,600 individuals.
Additionally, the project includes plans for a 70-hectare township to support the workforce and their families. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for February 2025, with commercial production anticipated to commence in the financial year 2030-31.
GAIL’s Board will seek investment approval following a favorable response regarding the required enablers. This landmark project is poised to significantly enhance India’s petrochemical production capabilities and stimulate economic growth in Madhya Pradesh.
