With an aim to improving governance and ensuring better delivery of welfare schemes to the remotest regions of Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday approved the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory. The newly established districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—will bring the total number of districts in Ladakh to seven.
Announcing the decision on social media platform ‘X’, Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the alignment of this development with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a prosperous and developed Ladakh. “In pursuit of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the Union Territory. This will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny,” Shah posted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed Shah’s sentiments, noting that the creation of the new districts would bring services and opportunities closer to the people. “Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people. Congratulations to the people there,” PM Modi stated on ‘X’.
The MHA has directed the Ladakh administration to form a committee to assess various logistical aspects related to the creation of the new districts, including determining their headquarters, boundaries, and administrative structures. This committee is expected to submit its report within three months, after which the UT administration will finalize the proposal and submit it to the MHA for further action.
Ladakh, which became a Union Territory in 2019 following its separation from Jammu and Kashmir, has struggled with low population density, difficult terrain, and a strategic location bordering China. The creation of these new districts is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the challenges of governance and development in such a unique region.
The Modi government has made significant efforts to enhance Ladakh’s development since 2015, approving nine schemes worth over Rs 21,000 crore exclusively for the region. With the creation of new districts, the administration aims to ensure that welfare schemes and government initiatives reach every corner of the UT more effectively.
In addition to improving connectivity, health services, and education, the government has also taken steps to boost Ladakh’s economy through tourism and small industries. The establishment of winter-grade diesel sales outlets and cold storage facilities, as well as the development of smart classrooms and a Central university, are among the notable achievements in the region.
Home Minister Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to the people of Ladakh, stating, “The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.” The creation of these new districts is expected to play a pivotal role in the all-round development of the Union Territory.
