In a step towards promoting sustainable energy in India’s healthcare and research sectors, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has signed a landmark MoU with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN). The partnership aligns with the Prime Minister’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and India’s commitment to a greener future by harnessing solar power across ICMR institutes nationwide.
Under the agreement, NVVN will supply, install, test, commission, and maintain rooftop solar panels with a combined capacity of 4,559 KW at 15 ICMR institutes. This project also includes a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for grid-connected solar projects, ensuring a fixed solar tariff over the next 25 years. The initiative will help ICMR reduce energy costs and embrace long-term sustainability, reflecting the government’s push towards renewable energy.
Currently, seven ICMR institutes are already powered by solar energy from previous projects. The new agreement will expand these efforts, further reducing ICMR’s carbon footprint and fostering energy efficiency.
This partnership with NVVN marks a crucial step in ICMR’s commitment to green energy and sustainability, helping the Council lead by example in healthcare research while contributing to India’s renewable energy goals.
The initiative will not only aid in reducing energy costs but also position ICMR as a leader in sustainable energy adoption within the biomedical research community. By integrating solar power into its operations, ICMR continues to strengthen its role in advancing India’s national renewable energy targets while supporting environmentally conscious healthcare research.
