Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, expressed confidence that India is set to emerge as a global provider of high-security, quality telecom services and equipment, particularly to emerging economies. Speaking at the inauguration of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly and the 8th Edition of India Mobile Congress in New Delhi today, the Minister highlighted India’s readiness to lead international telecom supply chains.
Goyal emphasized that India’s role in advancing technology for the Global South will be pivotal, helping to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of making digital connectivity affordable worldwide. He urged Indian companies to develop innovative solutions to bridge the gap in network connectivity for countries still lagging behind.
The Minister underscored India’s success in achieving seamless broadband connectivity across rural and urban areas under the flagship Digital India campaign launched by Prime Minister in 2015. This digital transformation, minister Goyal said, has earned India the reputation of being the Trusted Partner of the World, providing high-quality, affordable, and reliable telecom services. He credited the Prime Minister’s foresight in using technology to promote good governance, expand business opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.
Reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Goyal highlighted that the early digital push allowed essential services and business activities in India to continue without disruption. He noted that global companies now look to India for Global Capability Centres (GCCs), recognizing the nation’s capacity for high-quality, cost-effective telecom solutions.
The Minister also lauded the efforts of the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) in making India self-reliant in technological advancements. He pointed out that India has launched 5G in parallel with developed nations and is on track to lead the world in developing and launching 6G technology through the National Broadband Mission, ensuring that 5G reaches every corner of the country.
He concluded by reaffirming India’s commitment to setting global standards in technology and quality. He noted that on World Standards Day, celebrated yesterday, India continues to work towards providing high-quality goods and services, with its digital ecosystem—including machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data analytics—playing a vital role in shaping the future. The Minister highlighted India’s standing as a global leader in innovation, democratising technology for underserved communities, and contributing to a more connected world.
