Indian Railways has announced plans to upgrade 40,000 conventional coaches to meet ‘Vande Bharat standards’ in the coming years. This announcement was made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her Union Budget 2024 speech on February 1st.
The Vande Bharat Express, known for its self-propelled semi-high speed services, has been hailed as a transformative initiative in Indian Railways since its introduction in 2019. Now, the national transporter aims to extend similar levels of safety, convenience, and comfort to a broader range of passengers through this ambitious upgrade program.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that the upgrade process draws inspiration from the successful implementation of the Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains. By incorporating feedback and experiences garnered from these modern trains, Indian Railways intends to equip the 40,000 coaches with enhanced amenities and safety features.
Contrary to misconceptions, the upgrade to Vande Bharat standards does not entail converting non-AC coaches into air-conditioned ones. Instead, the focus lies on improving existing facilities such as toilets and seats while introducing new features like mobile charging points, automatic water measurement systems, GPS, CCTV cameras, and more.
The transformational endeavor mirrors the recent introduction of the Amrit Bharat Express, which boasts several passenger-centric amenities and safety enhancements derived from the Vande Bharat model. These include semi-permanent couplers, sealed gangways, better toilets, mobile charging points, superior seating, and ambient lighting.
Through this initiative, Indian Railways reaffirms its commitment to modernizing the country’s rail infrastructure while prioritizing passenger comfort and safety. The move is poised to elevate the travel experience for millions of passengers across the nation, further cementing the Vande Bharat ethos as a beacon of progress in India’s railway sector.
